Web Design for Bloggers: a few simple tips to use on your blog
Whether you are passionate about web design or not, if you are thinking about starting a blog (or you already have), there are a couple of things you need to know about web design.
Let’s just start by stating the obvious:
Web Design it’s not rocket science.
It doesn’t really matter if your blog is about food, or lifestyle, or fishing. You have to be aware of these simple principles about web design as they will make your blog more pleasant for your visitors.
After all, no one wants to read a blog that is messy and hurts the eyes!
TIPS AND PRINCIPLES OF WEB DESIGN FOR BLOGGERS
RESPONSIVE
Nowadays, more and more people visit blogs through their smartphones or iPads rather than using the computer. That’s why you need to make sure your blog (and the theme you choose) is responsive.
Responsive is a web design technique that allows your blog to automatically adapt and resize itself based on the size of the device (computer, smartphone, iPad) people are using to view your blog.
It is essential for you, as a blogger, to make sure your content is easy to read.
COHESIVE COLOUR PALETTE.
You shouldn’t use too many colours for your website.
The maximum number of colours you should use (apart from black or white) should be between 3 to 5.
You can use for example dark grey and light grey for the background and text, and then add another colour, or maximum 2, for the rest (links, logo).
Also, choose colours that go well together.
You can use websites like ColorHex, ColourLovers and Adobe Kuler to find the perfect colour palette for your website.
TYPOGRAPHIC HIERARCHY
Owning a blog is all about creating a good user-experience for your readers so you really need to make sure that your blog is easy to read.
The importance of different text elements is dictated by the relationship they have with each other.
For example, the headline should be bigger than the sub-headline, the title of the paragraph should stand out more than the text.
You should also make sure that the colour of the text isn’t too light compared to the background (if you’re using a white background) otherwise it may be difficult for your readers to read it without having to squeeze their eyes.
WHITE SPACE
White space is the proper spacing between the paragraphs. It improves legibility because it makes the text easier to read and less ”crowded”.
USER EXPERIENCE
Usually called UX, it’s a principle of web design regarding the human (user) experience during the navigation your blog.
What the heck does it mean?
It’s pretty simple actually. It means that your blog should be easy to navigate and people shouldn’t go nuts trying to find pages, blog posts or the menu.
Everything must be organised and it should be easy for users to find the content they are looking for.
